Adjacent to the main airport runway, a full geotechnical and contamination investigation was undertaken for a new police helicopter facility.
The investigation included trial pits, window sample boreholes, in-situ soakaway testing and in-situ CBR testing, followed by laboratory testing. Recommendations were provided for the design of foundations for the new hangars, the helicopter landing pads and drainage, as well as contamination.
As the airport was used during WWII and given the site's proximity (<100m) to the main airport runway, the risk of unexploded ordnance was considered to be high. Following a detailed desk study, each exploratory hole location was scanned and cleared prior and during excavation by a specialist bomb clearance contractor.
